The White Sands of Morar with the islands of Eigg and Rum in the background. Halfway between Arisaig and Mallaig, stop and admire the beautiful Morar estuary, a huge expanse of gleaming sand at low tide and a beach walker's ideal. Observe in passing the sheer weight of water pouring into the estuary from the falls of Morar, fed by the shortest river in the United Kingdom (just a quarter-mile long). Loch Morar, over 1000 feet deep, is Scotland's and one of Europes deepest lakes and provides a lovely walk along its northern shores with vast vistas of loch and mountain scenery. Legend has it that "Morag", perhaps a relative of "Nessie", lurks in its depths. |
