Banavie Locks "Neptunes Staircase" on the caledonian canal by Fort William, Scotland

The Neptune's Staircase.

Eastward to Banavie, about 45 minutes from Arisaig and a mile or so from the A82 Fort William to Inverness road, the A830 crosses the famous Caledonian Canal, one of Thomas Telford's masterpieces, commenced in 1803, but not completed until 44 years later.

Neptune's Staircase, an extensive flight of locks, is close to the road and a brief diversion to admire this splendid work of early civil engineering is well worthwhile. Close by Ben Nevis, Great Britain's highest mountain, which rises to a height of 4406ft, dominates Fort William and indeed most of Lochaber.
