The castle was built for the Earls of Ross soon after the battle of Largs, but by the late 13th century had been taken by Kenneth McKenzie. It is said that Robert the Bruce sheltered here, but the castle saw bloody days again in 1331. It was then that Randolph, Earl of Moray and Warden of all Scotland, visited and to welcome him 50 criminals were executed and their heads placed upon the walls. In 1539, the castle was put under seige by Donald Gorm MacDonald, who died there. Later, during the English Civil War, the castle supported Charles I and after his defeat and execution, a Parliamentary garrison was stationed there . In 1719, there was another Jacobite plot to restore the Stuart kings and the castle was seized by Parliamentary forces and largely destroyed.Eilean Donan is described as the most romantic and the most photographed castle in Scotland.
